Business Breakfast: Risk Management and Regulation for the Financial-Services Sector

March 29th 2012 - London, BCS The Chartered Institute for IT

Events of the past four years or so make it self-evident that the regulation and management of risk in the financial-services (FS) sector is in need of radical change. What is not yet clear is how effective the pronouncements in 2011 of (inter alia) Basel III, HM Government and the UK Financial Services Authority will be in practice, or how they will affect the competitiveness and profitability of the UK banking sector.

In this business breakfast meeting we heard from two speakers who described an objective-based approach to financial regulation, coupled with a 'case-based' approach to financial risk management. With its well-established roots in safety-critical risk management, this approach promises to deliver significant benefits to both financial-services companies and regulators alike, especially when supported by suitably rigorous risk-modelling techniques.

Interested Roles include:

CEO, CFO, CRO, Heads of Regulatory Risk \ Compliance, Risk Managers, Financial Risk Analysts

'Business Process Modelling as an enabler for Effective Risk Management'

Phil Webb, Aptero Solutions

Phil Webb, Aptero Solutions' Technical Director, demonstrated how the processes normally confined to a Risk Management System can be fully integrated with an organisation's day-to-day business processes. The resulting model, which underpins each Financial Risk Case, provides a complete view of how financial risk (e.g. credit, market and operational risks) are managed by the organisation.
